EQ is a scalpel, not a cure-all

“The room is bad, just EQ it” is the most common mistake in this hobby. Parametric EQ is extremely effective inside its domain — but it has three physical boundaries, and EQ pushed past them only sounds worse.

What EQ can fix: peaks in the minimum-phase region

In the midrange and treble, most room resonances are minimum-phase: a peak in the frequency domain and a stretch of ringing in the time domain are the same phenomenon. A notch filter with matched Q removes both at once — the curve and the sound improve together. This is EQ’s home turf, and the improvement is immediate.

What it can’t fix #1: deep nulls

Nulls from acoustic cancellation — standing-wave nodes, boundary cancellation — are places where the sound physically is not there. Boosting pours more energy into the same hole: filling a −20 dB null theoretically needs 100× the power, and your driver dies first. That is why Acouvero’s PEQ matching automatically excludes deep nulls instead of boosting into them.

What it can’t fix #2: the time domain

Long reverb, echoes and flutter are problems of energy over time. EQ shifts relative levels; it cannot un-ring a room. The only cure for reverberation is absorption — and sensible placement. That is why the fix order is always: treat the room first, EQ second.

Target curves: not flat — right

A perfectly flat in-room response sounds thin and bright — treble falls naturally with distance, and ears expect it. Real targets carry a gentle bass rise and a treble tilt. Acouvero lets you set target level, bass rise, treble tilt and the matching band, caps filter count and boost/cut, and plots measurement, target, filter response and prediction together — with a per-filter rationale for why each one sits where it does.

From numbers to hardware

Filters only matter once they reach a device: Equalizer APO on Windows, miniDSP, CamillaDSP, or any player with parametric EQ. Acouvero exports all four formats (generic text, Equalizer APO, miniDSP coefficients, CamillaDSP YAML). Apply, then re-measure to verify — EQ is a closed loop, not a one-shot.
